Vegan Pizza | Napoli, Italy!

Pizza is one of my favorite subjects, (Exhibit A, B, & C.) so this post gets me excited. I am going to tell you about the best pizza I’ve ever had in my entire life. (Even better than pizzas I’ve had in my omnivore days.) The best pizza in the world can be found at it’s birthplace, Napoli, Italy! Introducing L’antica Pizzeria Da Michele, one of the first pizzerias established in 1870! (It was cool to eat a place with so much history!) You can find one of 2 pizza options here, margherita (with cheese) or marinara (without cheese, the better way ?) for about $6!  These fire-roasted pizzas have soft yummy dough and A TON of flavor. This photo does not give this pizza justice– you NEED to go to Napoli & try it yourself! (I would have had more photos of my many pizzas from Michele’s but because they’re absolutely delicious, I would gobble them down too quickly!) Everyone gets the same size pizza (a medium/large) but every pizza in Italy is a personal pizza, in my humble opinion.Michele’s is popular for locals and travelers alike, so be prepared to wait! (^^Can you see us?!^^) When we arrived in Napoli from Rome, our Airbnb host recommended Michele’s to us. (Our host in Rome, a woman originally from Napoli, suggested Michele’s as well!) We had been on the train for hours & were starving for food. We didn’t realize the popularity of Michele’s so on a Saturday during lunch hour, we waited 2 hours. It was painfully long because we were already hungry but SO WORTH THE WAIT!

When you arrive, take a number & take note what color the paper is because after they go through the numbers in one color, they’ll switch the color. Don’t make the mistake when you’ve been in the queue for 15 minutes & think the number they called is yours. If your paper is a different color, it’s not your turn. (It was a newbie mistake, don’t make it like we did!) The numbers are called out in Italian, so Google Translate it! (Translate the numbers preceding yours so you have an idea of when it’s your turn. ??)

I would say plan ahead when going to Michele’s but also know that they have less popular times. Going on a Saturday during lunch hour was probably not the best idea. We went again on Monday around 3pm and the wait was less than 20 minutes.^^This is when we were starving and waiting for our first pizzas. The best pizzas.^^

The employees of Michele’s do not speak English very well because Napoli is a very authentic part of Italy and does not have a lot of tourism like Rome or Venice. The language barrier isn’t a problem though, because you only have two options of pizzas to order!Turns out Michele’s is where a scene in Eat, Pray, Love is filmed! If you haven’t watched the scene yet, it really exemplifies my feelings about pizza. ???They don’t have very much seating inside so we opted to get our pizzas to-go. I personally would get them to-go again because there might be a feeling to be rushed if you sit inside.

I read a review on HappyCow saying the staff is “not really friendly,” but we didn’t experience that at all. I think a lot of it has to do with being patient and understanding because they have a lot of pizzas to make!

Michele’s can be found in Napoli’s old town, so get there as soon as possible & have the best pizza of your life!

Where was the best pizza you’ve ever had? Any pizza places you’ve been dying to go to?
